Trains of Thought

Patrick Cunanan

Bishop Amat Memorial High School

My main subject, the train yard with graffiti, was chosen because of my desire to depict the randomness of consciousness while mixed with the perception of “almost” real as things tend to seem in one's own mind. The use of the earth tones was used in order to create a slight visual contrast with the graffiti, making it stand out as well as highlighting the landscape at the same time. While in the process of creating this piece, a mixture of both traditional artistic techniques, as well as unconventional techniques were used. Also used in the making of this piece included mainly acrylics made and mixed specifically for each different portion, providing a various amount of color and simulated shades, again to mimic the haze and perception of imagination. When looking at this for the first time, one might think, “sloppy”, “unorganized”, and even terrible”. This yet again reinforces the spontaneity of the mind and its attempts to rationalize ad clarify perception.
